DMZ Peace Trail
Returning the DMZ to the public
The DMZ Peace Trail is divided into a main route and thematic routes. The main route is currently under construction.
The DMZ, where throes of the peninsular partition dwell, is the only site of division in the world and a trove of natural ecosystems. At the same time, it is the most acute confrontation zone on the Korean Peninsula and a heavily armed area, where the risk of military conflict has always existed.
All previous South Korean governments have worked hard to turn the DMZ into a peace zone. In 2018, requirements were fulfilled to turn the DMZ into a peace zone through an agreement and its ancillary agreements between the leaders of the two Koreas. The leaders of the two Koreas agreed in the Panmunjom Declaration (April 27, 2018) to “turn the Demilitarized Zone into a de-facto peace zone.”
